China remained Ghana’s largest source of imports in the fourth quarter of 2026,
accounting for GH₵14.3 billion worth of goods.
According to new data from the Ghana Statistical Service, this represents 23.3 percent of the country’s total imports, making China the single biggest external supplier during the period.
Other major sources of imports included the United States, the Netherlands, Belgium and Nigeria, highlighting Ghana’s dependence on a limited number of countries for key goods such as food products and agricultural inputs.
The data also shows that vegetable products were largely imported from Vietnam, pointing to the growing role of Asian markets in supporting Ghana’s food supply.
In total, Ghana’s import bill stood at GH₵61.4 billion in Q4 2026, driven by demand for fuel, machinery, vehicles and consumer goods—many of which are essential for food production and distribution.
Despite the high import figures, Ghana recorded a trade surplus during the period, supported by strong exports to countries like India and the United Arab Emirates.
However, exports remain largely focused on primary commodities such as gold and cocoa, while imports are more diversified and include finished and semi-processed goods.
The figures highlight Ghana’s continued reliance on global markets for essential supplies, raising concerns about food security and the need to boost local production.
